great info, sub-par for coloring

I'm a first year med student. I have both this book and The Anatomy Coloring Book by Kapit and Elson. I prefer the Netter's for the information content, but the drawings are so much better in the other. Netter is wonderful as an atlas, but because the drawings have just been adapted for coloring, they aren't really suited for the purpose. It's difficult to tell the borders of muscles, and I have colored things incorrectly more than once. The drawings in The Anatomy Coloring Book were drawn and labeled with coloring in mind, and therefore are much more clear. However, that book is seriously lacking in information about the muscles--if it had origin/insertion/action tables, it would be perfect. Overall, I think I prefer The Anatomy Coloring Book to the Netter's coloring book, and I would recommend that one first. (The Anatomy Coloring Book also covers nerves and vessels more thoroughly, and includes helpful sections for neuroanatomy, embryology, and even histology. It also has really helpful quizzes throughout.)

As far as the overall concept, I've found coloring to be quite helpful when learning anatomy. I use it for my first overview of the area we are learning--I don't expect to learn everything I know this way, but it gives me a good place to start. And it's fun!

Good for any med student

I started the first year of med school this year and really liked this book. It is extremely helpful since you probably need 3 books to makeup for this one book. It has a description of the location on the side and then pictures which you can color. My favorite part is that it has all the information about muscles like origin and inverations. It is a great book and a must-buy for any medical student.

For Massage therapist...really helps with fiber directions

Coloring the muscle's fiber directions really instills a good sense of how they are "running". This is good because we can more effectively treat them. The book also reinforces origin and insertions. You are coloring the entire muscle from origin, belly, to insertion. Muscles that have more than one head are clearly defined. The book has all the innervation's and lymph system to color. Actually, this books includes all the organ systems in rich detail. Included is a little background info on each structure that is to be colored. Though not super small, these are not large drawings either, but I like that. It makes you really distinguish what you are coloring. You need coloring pencils, not crayons.

Making my nursing school just a little bit easier

This book has excellent summaries of the conditions, pointing out the important details about them and giving "Patient-centered collaborate care."
This portion has "Assessment" covering things you should assess for with this condition.
"Interventions" with nonsurgical and surgical management. It may have a "National patient safety goal" OR "Community-based care" and other areas as well. Whatever applies to that condition.

The Appendices have lots of quick reference material.

2. Technology associated with fluid and electrolyte balance
3. Lab values (normal range and what it means to be high or low
4. Interventions for common environmental emergencies (ie. frostbite, heat stroke, snake bite etc)

And the whole thing is fairly small, so it can fit in my clinical bag.
I'm going to use this for care plans/concept maps and to learn about conditions for class as well. If I read about a condition we're covering before I go to class, it would be great preparation. then, when I don't have time, I can just study this mini version of our enormous text and get down the most important details. It's also easier to read than the big text.

For drawbacks. mainly the limited number of conditions. It's not going to have everything. But if it did it would be too big! So it picked the most common ones--the ones we will know by heart eventually.

Great Tool!

This is a great pocket sized book that has all of the med-surg diseases/disorders in alphabetical order, along with the patho, interventions, patient education. It has a great, in-depth explanation of Cancer and the various treatments (in plain English). Basically, it summons up the HUGE textbook.

After I remembered I had it (half way through the course - while failing), it was invaluable. I don't believe I would have passed med-surg without it.

Along with the Key Points from the Mosby/Evolve/Elsevier website - under Resources, I just studied the Key Points (audio & pdf), this great pocket book and then skimmed the textbook, if needed.

This book is a great starting point as well as a cliff notes to the big book., It might be a nice feature to include reference pages within the companion to refer to the big book.

Nice! Great For Back Up and Resource Tool

Nice study tool with the text. I got this book for a class, but it wasn't the right one. That did not stop me from using it and I have to say I am pretty impressed with the information. It is still inline with the basics of what you need to know and it is helping me study with the class as an extra tool so I can help increase my knowledge and be prepared to sit for the certification exam. It did have a few discrepancies with some of the chapters, but it wasn't something that would take away from anything and that is the only reason it only received four stars. Still, it is a great tool to use while waiting to take the certification exam, so I will use it for that.

Missing alot of pages

I was told that I would not have a problem buying a use book, I had second thoughts but had been told my friends that I had nothing to worry about WRONG, as I am doing the study guide I have found that I am missing a lot of pages that have been torn out. Now I need to buy a new book and have to stop my studying. Not happy.

Many chapters poorly written; many technical inaccuracies

To be honest, this text doesn't deserve any stars in the rating. Hoping for the quality text that I purchased years ago, I updated my library with this edition. I could not be more disappointed with the writing, the incorrect terminology (the term is ptyalism, not ptylinism - pg 182; the word is 'prostate' not prostrate; and no, osteopenia is not a disease), the variety of definitions for the same term at the beginning of several chapters, many of the charts, and the review of drugs during pregnancy and lactation -- just to name a few. I cannot recommend this text.

"I very seldom post reviews for products but I will make an exception here. I bought my first edition of Krause's Food and Nutrition Therapy while attending Penn State University in the early 80's and have updated a couple of times since. Nutrition has become highly specialized and it is next to imposible for any one person to be an expert in all aspects of nutrition therapy. Over the years, I have referred to this text more times than I can count because it is considered "the gold standard" among nutrition texts. I can't imagine a dietitian not having Krause's Food and Nutrition Therapy on her/his shelf."
