Great study tool
By depaul
I am a second year medical student who purchased these cards as a way to stay fresh on topics that we covered during first year and to begin studying for the Step I exam. I wanted a way to actively review material as opposed to sitting down and reading Robbins over and over again, since I have found that I don't retain much information like this.

The cards are laminated and come in a nice looking sturdy box, which is sitting on my bathroom counter. (Hey, you review when you've got time...) There are about 10ish cards per chapter of Robbins Pathologic Basis of Disease 8th ed, and each card has references to the latest editions of big and medium Robbins (Pathologic Basis of Disease and Basic Pathology). Right now I am only on chapter 3 - I do several every day - but so far I am very impressed. Each card has 2 sides, each with a full color picture (histology or gross), clinical vignette, and then 2-3 short answer follow up questions related to the picture. One side is labeled "side A" and should be done first, because side B is usually related to side A and builds on the vignette. For example, on side A there is a picture of a dissected aorta and a vignette hinting at Marfan's, and questions will ask you what the mutation is, what the histopathology would look like, etc. Then on side B, a CT showing blood in the mediastinum, and it asks you what happened, where in the layers of the vessel the defect is, and how the pathology is related to clinical presentation.

The only thing that is a little annoying is that since the answers to the short answer questions are on the opposite side, when you are looking at side A, you can see the answers for side B below. And, since both sides are related, this would give you a pretty good "tip" (and ruin the point) if you aren't vigilant about covering it up/not looking. I easily rectify it by covering the answers up with the box top.

One other thing that surprised me a bit is that all of the cards are very integrative. What I mean by that is, the early chapters in Robbins are very cell-biology focused. However, the cards for these early chapters use organ-system related vignettes to quiz you on the concepts of chapter 2 (ie a liver tumor to talk about VEGF or something). I feel this is important to point out because it means that I would NOT recommend you use this in your first year of medical school or until your curriculum (whatever it may be) has covered most of Robbins. Otherwise you will not get much out of it because you will not be able to identify the disorder in the vignette and then connect that with the underlying cellular mechanism, because you have not learned about the disorder yet.

Finally, some may say that Step 1 will be multiple choice, so the cards should have MCQs instead of short answer. But, I think using short answer questions to drill the material is much better at getting you to think and at and building a knowledge base than multiple choice questions would be. Plus, you will be able to use the cards more than once because you won't just have the answers memorized after one pass.

In short, I highly recommend this as a review for anyone who has completed (or mostly completed) study using one of the Robbins texts. It is worth the cost and very well done.

USMLE
By doctornewyork
Let me cut to the chase here. These are great cards, no doubt about it. However when it comes to the USMLE, CONSOLIDATE YOUR RESOURCES. In other words, there are inevitably many resources out there that will help you for the boards, but FA + QBanks + Goljan are all you really need. These could be good as a minor adjunct during second-year, but for boards purposes, use your time wisely. The amount of time you'd spend on these cards is not worth it compared to that which could be spent additionally having read FA AGAIN. The only cards that are worth your time are the Sanjiv Microcards and the Lange pharm cards. These latter two are unequivocally superior to most other resources. But forget the Robbins cards. They're good for intrinsic gain, but of lesser value for USMLE prep.

Fun pathology review
By Lindsey
The Robbins flashcards were great for reviewing for step 1. They provide a nice "break" from book studying, when you know you still need to study but can't stomach reading anymore. Big plus: there are lots of images (CT, MRI, X-ray) in the cards, better preparing you for images on step1. These cards are a useful addition as a review material, not intended as a primary learning source. It's a little awkward having the anwser for the back side of the card on the front and vice versa, but it does allow for twice as many questions. Great for keeping material fresh in your head.
