Very sloppy for a 4th edition and for the price

This book gets 2 stars because overall I really liked the organization of the material. There were many useful charts for breaking down different groups of bacteria by biochemical reactions. However, this book is FULL of typos. Some are funny, some have no impact, and some are outright false and could cause you to remember incorrect information. In my class it seemed as if every chapter went into, we were warned of things in charts that were wrong or reversed. In one of the fist chapters we had to read, which was covering the use of colony morphology in identifying an isolate, the caption for a picture was describing the colony morphology of Bacillus cereus on a blood agar plate; but the picture was of a positive D-test that was performed on a Staphylococcus aureus. Not only was this the wrong picture, but this picture did not even belong in the chapter at all. If I were not already working in microbiology as an MLT I think this book would have been worse for me, but since I already have direct experience with it, I was able to simply laugh off the mistakes. Other people in my class working on becoming MLS's that have not worked in micro had a much more difficult time as it is difficult enough to learn diagnostic microbiology much less to have to remember which things in the book were right or wrong. So if you are from a clinical laboratory program and looking at this book as a prospective required text for your program, I would look elsewhere. This textbook is worth no where near $100 in its current condition. If it were a term paper, it would have received an "F" due to all of the proofreading errors.

Would have been better if they'd cut out the filler.

For a science textbook, this was ... OK. If I were judging it by any other set of standards, I probably would only have given it 2 stars. The number one problem was that at least half of the textbook was filler that you had to slog through just to find the things you really needed to understand the subject. If not for that, it would have been a good textbook. It has plenty of charts and goes in more detail about the organisms and lab tests than most. I tried comparing it to another book by a similar title, Bailey & Scotts Diagnostic Microbiology. While B&S's book was easier to read and understand, it was lacking in crucial details at times, forcing me to turn back to this textbook. Some might want to try Essentials of Microbiology by Kumar. I'm still reviewing it, but it seems to be one of the few Micro textbooks that's not only simple and straight to the point, but also includes something lab students really need: Details about biochemical tests and reactions! At the very least, I think Essentials of Microbiology would be a good partner to this textbook.

difficult to get through

I haven't looked through this book in a while (at least 6 months) and I no longer have it, but I still thought it was worth reviewing my thoughts about this book. This was a required text for my Clinical Microbiology course for my degree program in Medical Laboratory Sciences. I am one of those people who likes to read the text, but with this book about half way through the semester I gave up. The way the information was presented just seemed daunting. It was hard to pull out the important information out of the text, everything came across as a jumbled mess. I gave up on the text and just focused on the teacher's powerpoints. I am now required to use this text during my clinical year but instead of keeping this one I replaced it with Bailey & Scott's Diagnostic Microbiology text and it is a million times better. Do yourself a favor if this is a required text, pick up a better book, it will help so much with your class.

Solid Review

I'm an old dinosaur, having just completed my second ABEM RE-cert. I took the Nat'l Emerg Med Board Review course, but I about panicked when I got to the course, and realized how much I had forgotten. It was too late to try to finish the PEER, especially since the new one isn't out yet, so I gave this one a try.

I did not even open it on my Kindle. I used Amazon's "Cloud Reader", and it worked great. I like the bulleted outline format, instead of a lot of text. I just wanted the important items, my brain seems to incorporate bulleted items as visual images. On my laptop, it was like looking at a powerpoint slide. Easy to go to the next page, either with the up/down, left/right, or pageup/down keys.

I liked their bolding of important items. I didn't have time to finish it since I started late. I had one question that stumped me today, I looked it up, and there it was. Fortunately I had taken an educated guess, and was right... I think.

Color graphics were good, although if there is a way to "zoom", I don't know how to do it. It would have been helpful. REALLY ANNOYING that I can't cut and paste even a small piece for my notes [again there may be, but not obvious].

I think that it was a very good review, and based on the questions that I just saw a few hours ago, if I knew that book front to back, I don't think passing the test would be hard. In my first cert, and even my first re-cert, I as able to COMPLETELY READ Tintinalli's book. Bought one a year ago with a grand plan, "x" chapters a week... well, you can guess how well that went. This book would certainly be "doable". Worth the $, I believe. Lot cheaper than Mallon's course (~$1500 + hotel/airfare).

Worth the purchase

Recommended for an Undergrad Epi course and glad I bought it. I still definitely had to go through the assigned text but this was a nice supplement. In some areas it was easier/more concise and in other areas it was way more detailed. If you are getting this thinking you'd be able to skip reading an assigned text, I doubt that this would be a good choice - but then Epidemiology is fun anyways, why would you do that? But if you're looking to supplement or another way of explaining the same topic in not so many words this might be a good choice.

Inadequate for board exam prep, but good reading for specific audiences

Used this along with the Mayo Clinic Preventive Medicine and Public Health Board Review (Mayo Clinic Scientific Press)Preventive Medicine & Public Health: PreTest Self-Assessment and Review to prepare for the Preventive Medicine Certification Board exam (Core & Public Health/ General Preventive Medicine) this year.

The strength of this book lies in the biostatistics and epidemiology sections - they are well written. Rather than giving you several formulae to memorize, they encourage you to form an intuitive understanding of the concepts, which I prefer.

The questions in these sections are also good in that they force you to acquire a thorough understanding of those concepts.

I also appreciate the spirit of this book - it is one of the few to explain "what preventive medicine is" and is written by authors who clearly love what they do. In fact, on the spectrum of reference textbooks read by self-confessed nerds like me, it's actually fairly interesting. If I'd read this as a student or intern, I'd have gained valuable knowledge and perspective on the field of preventive medicine prior to my MPH. Reading it makes me proud of being a practitioner of preventive medicine.

That being said, in terms of nuts and bolts preparation for the board exam, this book is quite inadequate. While the biostats/epi sections are fairly decent, you'll absolutely need another text for studying occupational medicine and environmental medicine, and you'll need to go to the USPSTF and CDC website to look up chronic disease guidelines, screening recommendations, and immunization schedules. (The Mayo text is better on these sections). It's also not a book you want to cram with a month before the exam - it's detailed, wordy, a bit rambling, and the tables and figures are not very helpful. However, the questions at the end are useful preparation for the board exam.

I would recommend this, however, as a book for third year medical students or new interns/residents looking to round out their education and master concepts of biostats/epi. It's also a good book for PM practitioners to display on their bookshelf.

Excellence in Biostatistics

I have used the 2nd edition but the 3rd edition
is superior. The 3rd edtion has a complete
medical glossary, classical mathematIcal examples
are transfered from the 2nd edition, and at the
end of each chapter, there is a short test on the
material. No question, there are areas where
the authors, or publishers, could have been
clearer but overall, most readers will
benefit from the examples. Readers in Biostatistics and Epidemiology know these
subjects can be difficult to write about, but
I found this edition reader friendly.Is it perfect? No, but for the intermediate reader,
it fufills the need to master complex subjects.
One of the sources for this book is the
"Basic and Clinical Biostatistics", 4th, edition,
2004, Dawson, B., etc. This book received
mixed reviews from readers. I think most
readers will be satisfied with Jekel's book.A
major advantage to this text is the clear explanations of major subjects like sensitivity,
specificity, and odds ratios. Readers will be
deighted with this clear writing.

Wonderful resource. Helped me realize optometry is quite insignificant compared to opthalmology. Beauitiful pictures, loaded findings, everything needed for SOAP review of ocular pathology.

Limited Clinical Information Required for Boards, Shelves, and Practice

What this book does is give you a solid foundation about the pathophysiology associated with diseases. What it DOESN'T do if give you necessary clinical information required for boards, shelf exams, and clinical practice. For example, the sections on COPD and asthma: it does not discuss the different stages of severity of the diseases or what the guidelines recommend on treating the different stages. It's essential to know the difference between mild-intermittant asthma vs moderate-continuous asthma because different treatments go with it. It does not even discuss the stepwise approach to adding new medications to asthma patients.

This same pattern holds true throughout the text. It gives a good summary over pathophysiology, but does not go into clinical detail about classifying or treatment diseases, which is necessary for any medical student, resident, or practitioner.

Great comprehensive internal medicine book!
This is the first internal medicine book that I have actually committed to reading.

The best part about this book is that it's readable. I made it through step 2 ck and almost all my rotations using small 'review books' and I was relying on memorization; however, with this book you get a concise yet comprehensive review by organ system that gives you an understanding, such that you come away knowing the material without the memorization.

I wish I had read this book earlier in my academic career. It's a great book that can be used for review or to follow along during rotations. If you want quick facts, get a Washington Manual. If you want an in-depth understanding that lasts, get Cecil's.

Great set, but a bit too shallow

The new form of the Fonseca set is better with it all put in 3 volumes, and it looks great. I find it to be a good general reference and study tool but it lacks some depth that you would get from books dedicated to each of the topics. I wouldn't expect this to be the only book an oral surgeon needs, although by a look at the topics it may appear so, but it is a good addition to your library. My thanks go to the authors for continuing to put out such great texts.

Comprehensive and Current

This three volume set is the most comprehensive work to date and, I believe, outdoes every similar text in recent memory for this subject matter. I have an internal bias, but aside from that, the work represents the most comprehensive and current collection of material on Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery one can own at the moment. The organization of the text is well thought out and well executed. The specialty area has expanded, and this text has kept pace very nicely. I would suggest it for students, residents, fellows, OMS faculty, OMS private practitioners, and other head and neck specialists.

This 3-volume oral and maxillofacial surgery covers the field of oral, implant, trauma, orthognathic, esthetic and cleft and craniofacial surgery. A separate section (Vol.II, section II), deals with surgical pathology and second one with TMJ disorders. A separate colour atlas at the end of every volume is included. This, more than 3000 pages, book is a comprehensive reference to a wide field of oral and maxillofacial surgery. A CD-ROM is missing, otherwise a very important tool for the trainee and the specialist as well.
