If you have to read Robbin's, get this Pocket Companion!

Any med student knows Robbin's is like running into a 1,500 page brick wall over and over again to become the future Dr. House of the world. The pocket companion is perfect for finding key concepts and reviewing the day or 2 before exams. Cannot live without this Pocket Companion. It's going to get me through class, rotations, residency, and life as a doctor.

Handy to keep around

Reading the Pocket version helped me stomach the monster task of reading the "big" version. This pocket version has most of the details from the book, but not all. It was convenient to bring places - it really did fit into my shorts pockets! The authors intended to capture the wisecracking attitude of the Big Book, but fell well short. Too squeezed for space to include humor.

Good luck to all souls attempting a PBD course.

use with cautions, many incorrect contents

I have been studying for the USMLE step 3 since Last May, I have bought a number of review books from nail the board to the recall as well as first aid step 3.

I have nearly completed the USMLEWORLD qbank and been doing kaplan Qbank and at this point, I was tempted to take a look at the so called "throughly updated", Crush step 3, which is false and misleading. They simply changed the coloring and layout of the same book and added a few tables for vaccinations and RA meds!

Its not really updated but they added such as "smoking is the number one modifiable cause of death" instead of older version, which was preventable...

there are many outdated informations and simply incorrect informations but they did not bother to correct it but still claims to be "throughly updated".

PCOS or PCOD, it does not mention the weight loss as one of the first line RX (OCP) and it fails to mention one important modality, which is metformine beside clomiphene if pt desires pregnancy.

And when it comes to viral hepatitis, It fails to mentions the significance of having concurrent hepatitis D with Hep B, means it accelerates the hepatitis B with more aggressive progression. A third year med student knows that hep D is a dependent on Hep B as it mentions. It is same information as Crush step 2.

For Mallory-Weiss tears, it also fails to mention one critical concept that it often self limited and stops bleeding its own but the author says that sclerose any bleeding vessel, of course a third year surgery rotation student knows that if bleeding vessele, it has to be scloerosed!

For Esophageal CA, the author says that adenocarcinoma is now more common than Squamous cell CA, which is incorrect! There is equal incidence of both types of Esophageal CA in the US, and in the worldwide, 90% of the esophageal CA is the Squamous Cell CA. Adenocarcinoma of esophagus is most prevalent in whites and it rarely seen in blacks in the US.

For pseudotumor Cerebri, it says the treatment is "supportive" and weight loss helps, it not repeat LP or shunt. This is incorrect and misleading to say "supportive" when there is serious threat of blindness if the IOP is not lowered by Diuretics acutely and yes, by shunt.

For infant botulism/botulism, the author says the child may need to be intubated and spontaneous recovery so on....but it fails to even mention of monovalent human derived antitoxin treatment for the infantile botulism. The most updated information says that all patients receive antitoxin immune serum to prevent progression and shorten the duration.

For G6PD deficiency, the author says that treat by avoiding precipitating food and medications but this is also expected that a second year med student knows it to stop the precipiationg drugs! it should have mention that treatment also include IV hydration for acute episode and folic acid supplementation as some authors even says lifetime supplements of folic acid for all G6PD deficiency pts.

I found first aid is "better" and more accurate than this longtime overrated book, Yet it is true that there is no such thing as a perfect board review book.

I have been reading "page in a medicine book" series and I found this is surprisingly well written, evidence based and updated..

Disappointing

I used Step 2 Secrets to prepare for Step 2 and thought it was an excellent resource. Crush Step 3, though written by the same author, isn't an adequate resource. Much of what is covered in Crush wasn't on my Step 3 exam and much of what was on my Step 3 exam was material not covered in Crush. I'd look elsewhere.

Insufficient alone

I just finished Step 3, literally, as in yesterday. I used this resource because, as a resident in pathology, I really just needed to get through Step 3 and I figured, based on my experience with this authors excellent "Step 2 Secrets" book, this may be the best way to do it. I think this book will help you get a passing score but, overall, it's not that helpful, is insufficient alone, doesn't give you much bang for your buck, and merely copies much of what was in the Step 2 Secrets book. Now that I've taken all the Step exams, there is no doubt that the major difference between 2 and 3 is knowing the first line management for treating a patient or the first line/best diagnostic test. This Crush Step 3 book isn't at all geared toward that, it simply and haphazardly lists random treatments and diagnostic tests for diseases, without addressing the first step in management or best diagnostic test (these are ABSOLUTELY the keys to Step 3). It helps with making associations (ie: hypertonic saline-->central pontine myelinolysis) but says little about the intricacies surrounding these associations (ie: no matter how much these review books freak you out about central pontine myelinolysis, sometimes you just need to give hypertonic saline...how fast can I give it if I need to?). After all, most of us at this point have no problem with associations but rather the caveats and specifics, this book will not help you in that area whatsoever. As mentioned in some of the other comments, I'd also caution you that some of the material is even misleading/outdated. I used it as an outline, so ultimately I think it's fine...but I wouldn't recommend using it as more than that, or making any real patient care decisions off of what you read in it.

Wish I would have known about this one earlier

I have gone to three hot seats and am now understanding the oral boards format. We have had a few people in our residency condition chest due to lack of teaching. This book is concise with all the chest patterns in the format that you need to know for oral boards. I wish I would have known about it earlier. Those who conditioned used this book and all passed on the second round. They said that they would not have passed the chest section without this book. It gives you the differentials that you need to know along with a brief description of the disease and little pearls about how to tell the difference. Wonderful book and worth every penny!

Wonderful Resource

Essential Orthopaedics is an excellent resource. I am a primary care resident and was in need of a great resource for musculoskelatal/ortho issues. The book is well organized, and easy to use. Great pictures and great section on common procedures. I have used this book for questions that have come up with patients that I see in clinic. I have found this book very useful and would recommend it to others.

Best out there

As an NP in the ER, I am faced with Ortho/MSK complaints almost every hour. I have found most of the General Medicine and quick reference books somewhat lacking in practical, useful and quickly extractable information regarding common joint issues. I noticed this book in the clinic, my other "fun" job. After flipping through the first few chapters, I was sold. The color, the joints, A/P and USEFUL information, imaging, IA injections, even checklists, all arranged smartly, so practical. I have not used the CD yet (but can't wait). This book is now in my top FIVE pulled off the shelf. Bravo!

Very Good Resource

I am a family medicine residency director and practiced in a rural area for a number of years prior to moving into academic medicine. I have been looking for a good "go to" MSK reference text for a long time - 20 years. I may have finally found it. The book is well organized by region, and it is pretty easy to find topics. It also covers a wide array of problems encountered in a primary care setting, including soft tissue injuries, dislocations, fractures, sports injuries, overuse syndromes, etc. Each topic includes a bulleted review of concepts, history, physical exam and treatment options. These seem remarkably complete for a text covering such a broad range of topics. There are good illustrations of relevant anatomy, exam techniques, x-ray findings, etc. The book also has wonderful directions for performing common procedures, with good illustrations. The weaknesses are relatively minor. Many of the "when to refer" recommendations reflect the quaternary background of the orthopedists. For example - "refer all phalangeal fractures to an orthopedist or hand specialist" is not going to be very helpful (or realistic) advice to a family doc practicing in a small town where the nearest orthopedist is an hour away. And while the section on pediatric fractures is fairly good, some of the common fractures encountered in the primary setting from a FOOSH in kids (eg, torus and greenstick fractures) are not addressed. So perfect - no - but very, very good - yes. And for a first edition, remarkably well done.
