Great resource for endodontics

This was the required textbook for my endodontics class in dental school. I like this book. It is not an intimidating book. It explains itself well and is not very thick, but seems to cover everything I have needed to know about endodontics.

I enjoy the clinical pictures. They are high quality and do a good job supplementing the text. I haven't personally used the CD, but I believe our teacher has shown us several features from the CD and I found them helpful.

I have no complaints. I'd recommend this book for students or clinicians that need a good reference. Let me know if you have any questions. Hope this was helpful.

a must read and a great reference for endodontics for general dentists and endodontics alike

This book is arranged and sorted in a great way that makes it easy for you to understand and comprehend as well as getting back to the information you need, the science and facts included in this book should be in every dentist's disposable, i can't recommend this book enough.
It helped me with diagnosis, treatment planning and actual treatment, thanks for everyone who contributed to this great book.
Only problem is i didn't get the DVD that should be assorted with the physical copy because i bought the kindle version which is also very good.

Very informative and easy to follow.

I purchased this book to refresh my knowledge. I had enrolled in college and wanted to test out of their Medical Terminology course. I had taken Anatomy & Physiology in the past and had worked as a medical secretary in a hospital so I was looking to feel more confident with my word knowledge. This book was easy to follow and was very helpful. It has a lot of diagrams and pictures to give visual aids. I took the exam and passed.

Great except for visual CD design

I just received this book and think it's great. I'd taken med. term. years ago and ordered this as a brush-up course for myself (I do medical transcription).

So far, the only complaint I have is the visual CD, where somebody tried to be a little too creative with the coloring.

The computer exercises are great and give good explanations and examples--if you can SEE them! Some terms are written in dark blue against a dark brown background! What the heck were they thinking? And other terms are actually BROWN on a brown background! What?? I keep having to move my head around to view the screen from different angles in order to read the terms. It is extremely annoying and distracting.

It should have been done in clear colors, dark text on light background. Learning medical terminology is not the time to get cute with "fancy" designs! Big mistake.

Outside of that, the book seems good. I have a problem with some of the pronunciations. For example, "acute" = ah-KUT. Does that rhyme with "cut"? No, but if you didn't know better, you could think it does.

However, out of 100, I'd give the book itself a 98, at least. In one of the reviews here, someone thought there was too much attention paid to illustrations. I actually like the pictures. Hearing a doctor say the patient wears a CPAP machine at night is one thing but seeing what it looks like (if you're unfamiliar with them) is something else (p. 163). I think the illustrations are helpful for understanding terms.

All in all, I recommend the book, but next time, Davi-Ellen, you may want to more closely oversee the people working on the visuals for your accompanying CD! (I still have an anatomy and physiology book written by Davi-Ellen Chabner called The Language of Medicine from almost 20 yrs ago when I learned medical transcription, which was also a good book.)

I have learned a lot reading this book. I work in medical records and transcribe dictations and this has really helped me a lot in this area being that I have no medical terminology knowledge at all. I love the CD that comes with it, you can take test over and over on it. It's awesome.

Pediatric infectious diseases

This is the sixth edition of the famous textbook or some would say the Bible in pediatric infectious disease that was conceived by Ralph D Feigin and James D Cherry, when they started collaboration 40 years ago, but the first edition was only published in 1981. This is also the last time that the "spell" of Feigin will be felt, because he died before the publication, but was active and contributed right up to his death.
Ralph D Feigin (1938-2008) was born in New York City and received his MD from the Boston University School of Medicine, trained in pediatrics in Boston and also spend time at the United States Army Research Institute during his subsequent army service, where he became interested in infectious diseases. In 1968 he went to Washington University and St Louis Children's Hospital, where he developed a state of the art infectious disease division. His work there and later, when he in 1977 moved to Houston in Texas to become chair of pediatrics at Baylor College of Medicine and Texas Children's Hospital was the basis for the development of the textbook and his unique impact on the field of infectious disease in childhood.
This textbook in two volumes at 3,568 pages is a mammoth achievement with eight parts, 25 sections, 266 chapters and close to 300 contributors from 108 universities in 15 countries worldwide. The eight parts and topics consists of host-parasite relationships and the pathogenesis of infectious diseases, infection of specific organ systems, infections with specific microorganisms, viral infections, infection control, therapeutics, prevention, approach to the laboratory diagnosis and biostatistics applicable to this subspecialty.
Impossible to single out any one of the 266 professional chapters, but I really liked the chapter (7) on epidemiology of infectious diseases by Robert S Baltimore and Eugene D Shapiro with historic examples and material explaning how to use clinical manifestations and epidemiology to detect disease patterns. One thing that I missed was color pictures, since the black and white pictures were neither good quality not instructive for educational purposes, so maybe next edition will have color pictures? All in all a very important book that should be on the shelves of any pediatric department around the globe.

New Edition

I have to recertify for EP boards this coming week. I have prior editions of this book and found them too dense in the basic science portions and too scattered overall. This edition was just published, I preodered and received the new edition 2 days ago.
This edition is much better streamlined and much better approachable for the clinician in the basic science portions. The sections fit together better to give more of a sense of cohesiveness within each section. The overall layout of the edition seems to make more sense to me.
I have already been able read the entire section on Molecular Genetics and much of the section on Ventricular Arrhythmias, especially relatively newer clinical disorders (PCCD, BrS, newer forms of cLQTS, ARVC etc) and have found it readable and informative. It clearly fills in gaps in my knowledge that I haven't necessarily completely followed in a busy clinical practice that makes me much more comfortable to take the recertification exam.
This is NOT a review book, by any means.
This edition is a much more improved compilation of the current state of electrophysiology.
Further, it does not over emphasize the current pressing matters of the day (that you get bombarded with at every EP meeting anyway) such as atrial fibrillation, resynchronization, heart failure or the like.
There are other books that cover these topics in appropriate detail (see Ellenbogen's latest Pacing and ICD therapy book for the most comprehensive information you will ever want on resynchronization therapy, authored by Seth Worley, for instance).
The section on modeling is cut back (thank you) as is the emphasis on autonomics. The chapter on mapping is brief, but again those are entire manuals themselves. You have to say something about them I suppose, but if you're not already using these mapping systems, you're not going to learn it in a general EP book so it's better not to waste the space.
So, after only 2 days of access, I find this a much improved and appropriately updated version of a classic text.
I may update this after taking the recertification exam in 3 days.
