Best review book ever!

This book is the best. I just got it last week and already it has helped me a lot. There are priority questions where you list things in numbered order ,which is new for the boards. There are also pictures with questions,which is also new. Studying for my first exam this level(3 out of 4) with this book was even more helpful than I anticipated. I got to the test and noticed many familiar questions being asked and I sat there thinking, thank god I studied that review book. Worth every penny!

Good Review Book but get another book for NCLEX questions

I just passed the NCLEX!!!!! :-)
Anyways, This book is a great review BUT the NCLEX questions in this book were much easier than the actual questions I saw on the test. Check out NCLEX 101: How to Pass! and Kaplan's NCLEX-RN Strategies for the RN licensing exam 2007 Edition for questions more like NCLEX.

This was an excellent review book for the NCLEX exam! I used this to prep me for my CNA test first and then the ultimate NCLEX and I passed both! Obviously there have been some updates to this but this company is strong and I would definitely recommend going with them for study guides. I was thoroughly impressed at the content in this!

Great case based review

I am currently a neuroradiology fellow and have found this book to be excellent. The cases are very well presented with high quality images and a thorough discussion of a relevant ddx. I have found it to be an excellent study guide, especially when it comes to H&N imaging, which is a weak point for myself and many other trainees I know in radiology. I highly recommend it.

Incorrect Lactate Reference Interval values

I found the discrepancies on the 2012 edition.

The Lacate Reference Interval values on the table at the back of the book are incorrect. The values have been shifted by a row, so the Venous adult at rest is showing Arterial adult at rest. Arterial adult at rest is showing CSF child upper limit.

I hope clinicians have caught the incorrect data before using it.

What a joke!

Lots of errors and typos! NCLEX questions have the wrong answers! It was so frustrating that after our class was done with Pharmacology, our nursing program changed the textbook for the next class! Please don't waste your money!

Avoid this text if you can

We were required to have this text for our pharmacology course (part of the RN program). The text has so many errors and typos that the whole volume becomes questionable. My personal favorite: broad spectrum antibiotics are thusly labeled, according to the book, because of the pills large size...Other chapters refer to appendices allegedly in the back of the book...that don't exist. I spent much of the course using my Davis Drug Guide to sort out the fact from the fiction in this pharmacology text.

Since nearly all workers in the stroke field know, or know of, Dr. Caplan, he can be forgiven for the somewhat immodest title of his book. But can one person alone write a comprehensive book on stroke in the 21st century? Osler's Principles and Practice of Medicine (New York, D. Appleton), published in 1892, with all its antiquated ideas (such as the role of overwork in the formation of aortic aneurysm), remained in print for decades. Today, there is no less than one to two years between the writing and the marketing of a book, and that is just too long. The publishing industry is currently undergoing its greatest upheaval since the time of Gutenberg, and readers avid for state-of-the-art knowledge can find it on the Web as soon as it appears.

The other problem inherent in attempts to write about stroke is that the epidemiology is changing as a result of changes in lifestyle and stroke-prevention strategies. Data from early stroke registries are now anachronistic, and our ideas of pathogenesis have undergone a sea change over the past decade or so.

Caplan's Stroke is very much a personal perspective (as Caplan states in the preface); the prose is direct and clear, and the tone is at times almost chatty, which certainly makes for easy reading. A monumental amount of work has gone into the reading and evaluation of the seemingly endless publications on all aspects of stroke syndromes. There have been major changes since the second edition was published in 1993; most (if not all) of the grainy photographs have been expunged. Some of the chalk drawings remain, and some of the ultrasonograms are suboptimal and uninformative.

The book is divided into three parts and wisely avoids coverage of neurophysiologic and neurochemical mechanisms, apart from the basics. Part I, "General Principles," is essentially a basic primer of stroke, with a particularly enjoyable historical introduction. There are clear line drawings of basic abnormalities and good descriptions of available laboratory tests. Treatment of acute stroke in its broadest perspective is discussed in this section, including thrombolytic therapy and neuroprotectants -- an approach that is unusual but effective. Part II, "Stroke Syndromes," deals comprehensively with the acute abnormalities of stroke and covers the spectrum from large-artery occlusions to global ischemia as a result of cardiac arrest. It ranges widely over virtually all aspects of ischemic and hemorrhagic brain damage, is well illustrated, and has a balanced style that is possible only in works written by a single author. Part III, which covers prevention, complications, and rehabilitation, is perhaps the least informative and thus appropriately the shortest section. Most of the effective prevention strategies are discussed in part I.

To return to the original question: Caplan's Stroke is certainly a tour de force. It represents the perspective of a seasoned clinician who has a wealth of experience and wisdom. However, future editions, judging by the pace at which the data base is expanding, will have to incorporate an electronic version, in the form of either a CD-ROM or a specific Web site, which can be updated regularly.

Who will find this book most valuable? As the author explains in his preface, the book was originally planned for nonspecialists, but the first edition appealed equally to a great variety of specialists, mostly those in the neurosciences, and also to geriatricians and physiatrists. The index is fairly comprehensive, and the succinct sections should prove more accessible, especially to readers with limited time, than those of the large, more encyclopedic tomes currently available.

One can agree or not with some points of the author’s clinical, diagnostic, or therapeutic approach, but surely any reader who likes to learn about this disease from patients and a master teacher will read it like scripture.

The 19 chapters address all major areas of clinical stroke medicine through review of recent literature, application of

existing knowledge to the practice of vascular neurology, and review of the practical issues relating to investigation and treatment. To effectively help the reader, the volume is well illustrated with high-quality illustrations and tables. The illustrations in the section on arterial territories of the human brain are especially detailed and well produced. The quality of the many computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging brain images and angiographic images is generally excellent and largely justifies the price of the book […]

It is difficult to find any major faults with this book. It is not inexpensive, but there is no competition. There are some repetitions in the text, but these are few.

Caplan’s Stroke: A Clinical Approach is the most comprehensive and authoritative text available on the clinical manifestations of stroke. It is a pleasure to read, especially the first chapter on the history of stroke medicine, but it is also an invaluable aid to clinical practice and will likely be the standard reference for many years.

Easy read, not comprehensive

For a quick and easy read, this is a great book; however, it is not by any means comprehensive. In fact, for a more comprehensive review, I would recommend the J.P. Mohr book, the newest edition of which comes out January 2011. This books is geared more toward the non-vascular neurologist. For fellowship trained vascular neurologists, it is too general and doesn't offer much in the way of management.

Excellent stroke book!

Excellently written, really in-depth and personalized advice from Dr. Caplan. It feels as if you have a teacher just beside the book, and it reads like a novel. It has been an invaluable resource as I go through residency, definetely reccomended!

Many Vertebral Artery Patients are misdiagnosed. I was lucky to be correctly diagnosed within 3 hours. I highly recommend that all specialists, especially neurology students read this book. It might help you to correctly diagnose in the future.
