excellent textbook

We, surgical trainees in Malaysia, can be divided into 2: those who prefer American textboks, and those who chooses British ones. The trend lately is shifting heavily to the former. Among the american textbooks Shwartz is most popular by far, followed by Sabiston.
I tried very hard to read Shwartz but found it boring (and induces sleep too easily for a busy resident!) with poor subsections/paragraphing to highlight important points.
I was fortunate enough to discover Sabiston. Its format would appeal to both the american and brit group with clear subsections and usage of easy language. Chapters usually starts with a historical prespective which is not too daunting, but enough to entice readers to appreciate developments in a particular field. Another gem is the selected articles section which highlights important, must-read, classical articles at the end of each chapter.
So to those of you who find Shwartz too difficult to read, I recommend this excellent textbook.

It's a kind of book that everyone that take care of surgery patients must have. Even if you are a medical student, resident or senior. This book is complete and came with some differences compared to the 17th edition.

The book covers a lot of ground and is a source of a very large amount of clinically relevant information, much of which is well-referenced. There is good coverage of most medical disorders, some reference to surgical management, where appropriate, and a large amount of information provided in tables, appendices and drug formularies. There is also a liberal use of references. The quality of the book's materials and the sheer volume of information contained within this unusual text make it a useful addition to any practice library.

Disappointed

I own an older edition (Second - 1992) of this same textbook which was literally my best friend through many years of small animal practice. I thought it was about time to upgrade to the newer edition and modernize. Now, $175 lighter, I'm wondering if that was a smart decision. Just yesterday I examined a cat with feline plasma cell pododermatitis. A very rare condition but one which the earlier edition listed in the index and gave 3/4'ths of a page coverage to. Good luck finding any mention of it in the newest edition. How much other material has been squeezed out of this more recent, slimmed-down volume? It just goes to show that newer isn't always better.

I'm a foreign Veterinary preparing for the NAVLE test, I highly recommend this book, it is easy to read but at the same time it has the right deep in each chapter and very actual. It is not only usefull for students, I believe that it's a great book for Practioner Doctors. Great , great book, about Internal Medicine in Small animals. Other books in the same area such as Nelson -Couto, Ettinger, Birchard Sberding are really good but this one is my favorite.

If I could only have one vet text it would be this. It is so complete. For the GP SA practitioner this is deeper than the 5MC and broader than anything else I know of - includes dermatology, ophthalmology, behaviour, huge formulary.

A must have, especially if you love paediatrics!

This is actually quite a good book. The language is not tiring, the contents are well explored. The only thing that I felt it was missing was about early spay-neuter in paediatric animals, which the authors explore very little, and I think it is a really important topic for all veterinarians to explore.
Nonetheless, this is a really good read, and I actually couldn't take my eyes off it!

Core content for Emergency Nurses

I would consider this the "Bible" of Emergency Nursing. It is respectable in that it is written and published by the ENA (Emergency Nurses Association). It has DOZENS of contributing authors from many different clinical/specialty backgrounds of Emergency Nursing.

This book looks at the "core" knowledge base of Emergency Nurses and puts it in one place. While it's not a "casual" read, it is thorought. It's not written like some of those difficult "outline" books - there are actually paragraphs devoted to each topic. The index is pretty good also so you can look up specific references in the main text.

It is a bit big and heavy. Probably not the best to carry in your work bag, but definitely worthy of taking up the needed space on your desk.

Of course all the "traditional" content is here: cardiac, respiratory, neurology etc. Then there are more specific sections such as: Professionalism, Toxicology, Distasters, Substance Abuse, Sexual Assault and Forensics.

One of the BEST things about this book (besides it being FRESH off the press as of Summer 2007) is that it was written FOR Emergency Nurses BY Emergency Nurses - people who are actively involved in Emergency Nursing care.

Many of the listed authors and contributors I am familiar with via my dealings with the ENA and I can speak to these people's authority on their given topics.

Finally, this book is so comprehensive that I have used it as my main outline when I wrote and developed my own 2-Day CEN (Certified Emergency Nurse) exam review course. I believe this manual (in addition to others I used) gives the most comprehensive view/curriculum/core content for Emergency Nurses and thus it is my "Bible" as well for the CEN classes I teach. Many corrections needed... Is that what you want in a textbook?

My feelings on this textbook are very mixed. My pharmacology professor (a very bright and fair-minded individual) LOVES this text, and I can see why. It's written in very plain, accessible English. The chapters are concise, easy to digest. Thoughts flow smoothly from one thought to the next and are easy to follow when reading the prose of the authors. There are lots of charts and sidebars sub-segmenting the information into manageable topic-based chunks. There are several "Nursing Process" sidebars throughout each chapter that will stimulate the nursing mindset with regard to each topic. I've learned a great deal during this class.

HOWEVER...

Nearly every week, the professor sends out an email with "notes" regarding the text. The notes include inconsistencies, statements that are not considered "best practice", and mistakes. This is one professor catching these textual mistakes, and they are too numerous for my taste. I even found a flatly false statement regarding language use in the cultural competency chapter. Me. I don't even have a bachelors' degree.

Additionally, the index is woefully lacking. It's been nearly useless when looking up many varied topics, most broad enough to warrant mention in the index. The online resources are nice with some case studies that help "pull it all together" and flash cards that make self-quizzing effective.

While the text of this book is very easy to understand (earning it an extra star), I can not recommend it in good conscience to those seeking to use it as their sole source of information regarding a nurse's perspective of Pharmacology.

Dr. Mattoon, GREAT text, VERY COMPREHENSIVE. I could bore everyone with the case details, but I open the book every week to refer back, to learn this or that.
