The decrease in mortality and morbidity from infectious illness among children has shifted the focus of pediatric medicine to developmental and behavioral problems for parents and health professionals. The American Board of Medical Specialties and the American Board of Pediatrics have just this year recognized the new subspecialty of developmental-behavioral pediatrics and are developing criteria for board certification.

The publication of the third edition of Developmental-Behavioral Pediatrics is therefore quite timely. It is a comprehensive overview of the field by 121 experts. The book aims to reach both general pediatricians and subspecialists engaged in research and teaching in this relatively new field. The editors emphasize the inseparable connection between development and behavior and the range of variations in these two attributes of childhood.

The book is divided into eight parts. The first consists of nine chapters on the main developmental stages of childhood and parenthood and the effects of temperament and sex. The next three sections (25 chapters) cover the effects of environment, biology, and illness on development and behavior. Parts 5, 6, and 7 are especially targeted to clinicians. The 29 chapters in part 5 focus on specific behavioral outcomes during childhood, ranging from colic to attentional problems, mental retardation, and autism. The sixth section (10 chapters) describes assessment techniques, the seventh (11 chapters) describes specific treatments, and the eighth covers legal and ethical issues.

This book strives to be comprehensive and definitive, but the effort to reach both clinicians and researchers causes the results to be uneven. The initial sections are too theoretical for clinicians, and the later sections do not provide a critical review of research.

Many of the chapters are excellent, particularly the reviews of psychopharmacology, the effects of nutrition on behavior, eating disorders, attention and school-aged children, early intervention, and hypnosis. In view of the prevalence of suicide and homicide among children, more detailed coverage of these topics could have been provided, particularly with respect to the influence of the media and gun-control legislation and the efficacy of recent interventions aimed at preventing youth violence. In addition, innovations in pain relief and analgesia are not covered in sufficient detail.

The limited reimbursement from managed-care organizations for the time-intensive evaluation and care of children with developmental behavioral problems is an important issue for general pediatricians and subspecialists and is not adequately addressed. The chapter on obesity does not discuss the increased risk of type 2 diabetes among obese adolescents.

Despite these lapses in covering specific topics, Developmental-Behavioral Pediatrics should be a marvelous resource for all physicians caring for children.

Developmental-behavioral pediatrics

The first edition was published in 1983 with Melvin D Levine from Boston, William B Carey from Philadelphia, Allen C Crocker from Bosten and Ruth T Gross from Stanford. Gross retired after the first edition, Levine now at Chapel Hill retired after three editions, while Carey and Crocker are still going strong, but supported by three new editors from Chapel Hill, Denver and Palo Alto in order to update and revise with the new developments in this field over the past ten years.

This book has eleven sections: Life stages, environment, biological influences, general physical illness, behaviuoral and emotional outcomes, school function, physical function outcomes, developmental outcomes, assessment, management and treatment and legal and ethical issues with a total of 101 chapters. A very comprehensive book with even a chapter on disasters, war and terrorism and child response and mangement. A full spectrum of very competent academics and clinicians, who have authored these 101 chapters with a very pleasant layout and format.

I am especially happy to see the chapter on intellectual disability by Ellen Elias and Allen Crocker and satisfied that they have opted to use the international term for what was mental retardation, development disability or learning disability as they call it in the United Kingdom.

A book for the specialist in developmental-behavioral pediatrics, but also for the general pediatrician working in the community because many children that will be seen in the community is described here. Also for other professionals from other disciplines working with children and their families.

I absolutely love this book

I absolutely love this book. It saved me. I was doing research on certain topics in infant behavior. I went to the bookshelf and scanned through books I had accumulated over the past twenty years and pulled off several references. How I missed this book at first I don't know. Anyway, I became frustrated because the other "developmental" references either had only a blurb of information, or scattered misleads (where the index led me back and forth from one page to another).
I went back to my bookshelf in desperation and ran across this book situated between other irrelevant references. When I saw the title, I thought surely this must have something I can use. And it did! Not only did it provide what I needed, but it went in depth on the topic, made correlations that were useful, and presented cultural variations, statistics and most helpful, clinical implications.
I bought this book years ago, and it sat on my shelf, mainly for reference use. The reason I came back to Amazon was to see if there was a new edition. There isn't, but the one I have has shown to be so valuable, I'm spending the time now reading it -- the plan is cover to cover. I learn better when I have the how and why and not just facts. This book provides exactly that.

While I am still a learner in this area, I must say that this book seems complete, if a bit dry. There are chapters on all aspects of this field that I could think of, and I will use it as a good reference.

I've used all the other major textbooks for Surgery (Schwartz, Greenfield) and Sabiston is by far my favorite. It has the best mix of basic science and clinical info of the three. I highly recommend it.

online stuff is mostly junk

they sell the book saying premium edition and expert consult...which is some BS really .... there is some junk on their website...instead it is better to buy the normal edition which is of less price and same book..also with online edition so ...no need to buy the expert consult...also they say they have some videos on their site..and i was too excited to see them ...but it was a disaster...only five videos...and not really usefull ... no sound either explaining them or whatever

Outstanding Textbook - Use with the Clinical Review of Surgery

This is an outstanding surgery review text. When used in conjunction with a solid review textbook that breaks these topics down, your reading is highly focused and relevant with increased retention. I use the Clinical Review of Surgery and the two work well as a combination. FYI, very FAST shipping with Amazon - got the book the next day!

This review book is thinner than most, and that's the value of it. If you know what's in this book, you'll know the facts you need to pass the NCLEX-RN. It's a great summary of what we learned in nursing school, and the facts are presented in an easy-to-use format, with the most essential information boxed and accented. There is too much to know about nursing to put it all in one book; but, you can be confident that you know what you should know in order to pass the NCLEX-RN by studying this one book. Then, learning testing strategies and taking practice tests is what you'll do before you pass the NCLEX-RN exam.

Classic cardiovascular drugs book

This is a classic of cardiovascular medicine. In its newest edition Opie's book is excellent in many ways: first, it is a small book, almost a pocket-book, and loaded with concise yet precise infformation. It is the kind of book you can put in your black bag and you can belive it will be valuable anywhere, from the ICU to the ambulatory. There are many excellent chapters on drugs, all of them with an solid pharmacological basis, each chapter is an great review of the subject. But the best of this book is that it is very practical: it goes straight to the problems more commonly found in the cardiology office or in the ICU, with the big advantage of being small and portable. An must-have book for physicians intrested in cardiology and in cardiovascular drugs pharmacology, also excellent for residents. Hope we have an new edition of this great book soon!

It's OK but not excellent

The book is comprehensive and contains almost all what you want in cytopathology. The pictures are nice. However, I couldn't give the book more than 3 stars because of the text. The text is not easy to read and you feel yourself lost when you go through the text (this is in contrast to Cibas book which I believe that it is the best book in cytopathology I have ever read). If Bibo's book has better editing, it should become one of the best books. I recommend you combine this book with other resources.

About the Author
Dr. Laurencin is the Van Dusen Distinguished Endowed Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery, and Professor of Chemical, Materials, and Biomedical Engineering at the University of Connecticut. In addition, Dr. Laurencin is a University Professor at the University of Connecticut (the 7th in the institution’s history). He is the Director of both the Institute for Regenerative Engineering, and the Raymond and Beverly Sackler Center at the University of Connecticut Health Center. Dr. Laurencin serves as the Chief Executive Officer of the Connecticut Institute for Clinical and Translational Science at UCONN.

Dr. Laurencin earned his undergraduate degree in Chemical Engineering from Princeton, his medical degree, Magna Cum Laude, from Harvard Medical School, and his Ph.D. in Biochemical Engineering/Biotechnology from M.I.T.

A board certified orthopaedic surgeon and shoulder/ knee specialist, he won the Nicolas Andry Award from the Association of Bone and Joint Surgeons. His discoveries in research have been highlighted by Scientific American Magazine, and more recently by National Geographic Magazine in its “100 Scientific Discoveries that Changed the World” edition.

Dr. Laurencin is an outstanding mentor and he has received the Presidential Award for Excellence in Science, Mathematics and Engineering Mentoring in ceremonies at the White House. Dr. Laurencin has received the Elizabeth Hurlock Beckman Award for mentoring, and the American Association for the Advancement of Science’s Mentor Award.

Dr. Laurencin previously served as the UConn Health Center’s Vice President for Health Affairs and Dean of the School of Medicine. Prior to that, Dr. Laurencin was the Lillian T. Pratt Distinguished Professor and Chair of the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery at the University of Virginia, and Orthopaedic Surgeon-in-Chief for the University of Virginia Health System.

Dr. Laurencin is an elected member of the Institute of Medicine of the National Academy of Sciences, and an elected member of the National Academy of Engineering. He is also an elected member of the National Academy of Inventors.
