Good not great

I had high expectations for this book. Similar books from the same publisher are excellent. That said this isn't quite up to that standard. It does have some unique diagrams to help visualize circuits and tracts in helpful ways that other texts do not offer.

It doesn't have that board review feel of 'you should know all of this so we'll just give you tables and figures with the important information' but it doesn't offer much more detail. It reads as if the authors made a board review book with paragraphs instead of tables and a bunch of above average figures.

All and all I'd say Blumenfeld is the better book if you want a definitive reference. This one is, however, much faster and easier to read if you just want an overview.

Oftentimes clear, concise, but rife with errors, minimal index

The illustrations in the book are nice and clear. The illustrator paid close attention to detail. The problem is that the labels are blatantly incorrect an unacceptable number of times (especially in chapter 17, brainstem cross-sections). Not just a few times, but a large fraction of the labels. How can someone learn neuroanatomy when the text is wrong? Proofreading is essential prior to publication.

Also, the text oftentimes goes into semi-detailed anatomical descriptions with no related illustration, leaving the reader in the fog.

Thirdly, the index is very minimalistic, making it difficult/impossible to use this book to reference information.

Very nice if you hate Langman.

UAMS listed Langman's Medical Embryology as our required embryo book. I hate Langman with a passion, as you can tell in my review of it. It is poorly written, contains less than useful 2-D figures making it difficult to visualize morphologic changes, and contains at least two errors in every single chapter (and I'm not talking about minutia; it's errors big enough that our lecturers have to mention them in class). So, I began searching for an alternate embryology book that covered the material in about the same depth as Langman. This is it. This book is concisely and CLEARLY written. It also contains more figures, and these figures have a 3-D feel to them that make embryology much more understandable. Also, it appears to have vastly fewer errors. If your medical school requires Langman, by all means get Langman. Many of my classmates find the book an enjoyable read, and this book isn't a Langman clone, so the information each book contains is slightly different. The author (Moore) is also the author of Clinically Oriented Anatomy (5th Edition), and he correlates embryologic structure to adult anatomy more than Langman, which I enjoy. But if you have Langman, hate it, and need a supplement, this delivers in spades.

Good choice for coursework and review

"Before We Are Born" is an excellent introduction to embryology, particularly in comparison to "that other book" (Langman, my assigned text in medical school). Langman spends more time with molecular biology, while Moore & Persaud tend to gloss over the molecular aspects in favor of describing the etiology and appearance of various malformations (which is probably more clinically relevant, and to me, much more interesting!). This book is well-written and not too long (about 300 - 350 pages); if you prefer prose format over outline (like I do), this might make a good choice for USMLE review.

Unlike some of the other reviewers here, I was not taken with Moore & Persaud's illustrations. True, they are colorful and NUMEROUS (which definitely helps!). Still, embryology is, by necessity, highly visual and three-dimensional, and I often had trouble translating the cartoonish illustrations into a three-dimensional image.

This probably sounds like a major criticism, so you may wonder why I still gave it four stars. The writing is conversational and concise, largely making up for my problems with the images; and in any case, Langman's illustrations aren't any better (and there are far fewer), so it might just be the inherent difficulty in trying to illustrate such a complex topic. There are also tons of free embryology videos available online; so, whenever I had trouble visualizing a particular process in development, I looked up a relevant video online, which usually gave me the last little "push" into comprehension.

All in all-- highly recommended for coursework and review, especially in conjunction with online resources.

Review of Moore's Textbook on Embryology

Moore's Textbook on Embryology is the best text I have found that describes the develpoment of the human embryo/fetus. The text is detailed and the pictures support the text very well. I would recommend it for anyone studying human development in utero

  About the Author
  Dr. Richard E. Fine received his Bachelor’s and Ph.D degrees in Biochemistry from University of California at Berkeley and Brandeis University respectively. He then was a postdoctoral fellow in the laboratory of Francis Crick and Sydney Brenner at the Laboratory of Molecular Biology in Cambridge, U.K. During this period he and his colleague, Dennis Bray provided the first evidence for actin in growing neurons. Dr. Fine became an Assistant Professor of Physiology and Biochemistry at Boston University School of Medicine and demonstrated the existence of actin regulatory molecules, tropomyosin and troponin C in growing neurons, and he subsequently became interested in the role of clathrin coated vesicles in endocytic and exocytic processes in neurons and in other tissues. He also isolated and characterized vasopressin receptors, demonstrated for the first time that a large molecular, transferrin, can cross the blood brain barrier. His laboratory used an antisense oligonucleotide for the first time in vivo in the rabbit retina to demonstrate the critical role of kinesin in the transport of synaptic vesicles, neuropeptide containing vesicles and vesicles destined for the plasma membrane. In recent years Dr. Fine’s laboratory has focused on the role of the amyloid beta peptide in Alzheimer’s disease especially in brain capillary endothelium. Also he has recently focused on the role of a mutant protein VPS35, a component of the retromer in Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s diseases. During his career he has received over $25,000,000 in grant funding, have served on both NIH and VA review panels and authored or co-authored over 100 research papers.

  I am a nephrologist from Brazil working with hemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis for seven years. In my humble opinion, this is the best book covering the field of dialysis, only short to Daugirdas in the Urea Kinetic Modelling approach. I also own the latest editions of the Daugirdas, Henrich and Ahmad (from Seattle) books and this is definitely the most complete and easy to read.

This book is very well organized into easy to locate categories and has many photo examples of dermpath, along with great verbal descriptions of diagnosis, treatments, and prognosis. Highly recommended for those in private practice who see the MANY derm cases the we do each day.

Not a true radiologic atlas

The radiographic images add very little to the book because the vast majority are reconstructions never seen in practice or are odd angles not usually imaged. The book would have been much better by correlating standard radiographic CT scans and MRI's with the Netter drawings. As presented here, the radiographic images are little more than gee-whiz reproductions of the Netter drawings, and as such, add very little. I don't understand the purpose of the book.

NOT for Plain Films!

Yes it's netter. Yes the drawings are amazing to look at with great detail. Yes it is organized in a very easy to navigate layout. Yes it does include radiology images to accompany the drawings....but...don't expect plain films.

I read review on other sites and people from various positions in the medical field loved this book, but I'm at a loss for it's actual application on the job. Outside of ortho and maybe some neuro practitioners...who's reading MRIs? That's what we have radiologists for. I felt like that was a large majority of the images with the rest really being CTs. Working in the ER and inpatient setting I have had opportunities to look at CTs, but usually the radiologist is reading them before I even get to them as well. I was really hoping for a lot of plain film comparisons. Buyer beware, very much lacking plain films!

Overall I can't knock this book because it does deliver what it says, just sad that there are so many "modern" images. Guess I'll have to look for a book from the 80's!

If you like picture books, this is for you.

They should call this "Netter's Concise and Incomplete Radiologic Anatomy".

It is really lacking. Here is an example: If you want to see the brachial plexus - they have a page with it (one page), and on that page they marked the lateral cord (of course), the medial cord (naturally), and the... That's it. Well, they also marked the upper trunk. So there you have it - the brachial plexus ladies and gentlemen.

How about the foramina of the skull - they marked most of them, but the stylomastoid foramen? Nope. It's staring you right in the face and nope. How about the foramen magnum - arguably the most important one. No. They don't even name it.

I'm not sure the usefullness of showing an 3D volumetric CT representation that is identical to the netter drawing either. You just showed us the illustration. Now you are essentially showing us another illustration.

But then each page has a clinical pearl. There are 430 or so in this book. They are a sentence describing one thing about a pathology related to the anatomy. If these 430 were all you needed, you'd be living in 500BC.
